Certificate of Merit State Evaluations
The Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) Certificate of Merit (CM) is a statewide program of student evaluations that takes place each year from mid-February through early April. It is a systematic and comprehensive program based on requirements set forth in an applicable discipline Syllabus that tests students on their knowledge and abilities in music theory, technique in scales and chords, sight-reading, ear-training, and performance skills. Students may be enrolled in any level for which they are prepared.
There are 11 levels, from Preparatory to Advanced (level 10). The program is designed so that a student beginning at the Prep level in the second grade can complete the Advanced level by the time they graduate from high school.
Each student receives a “Certificate of Merit” for successfully completing all segments of the examination. Students who meet certain requirements can be recommended by their evaluator for “Branch Honors” and to perform at the annual MTAC state convention in July. Senior medallions are awarded to eligible high school seniors.
The Young Artist Guild (YAG) is the highest achievement that a CM student can attain. YAG offers semi-professional, paid performance opportunities to our most gifted young soloists through branch-sponsored concerts.
The Pleasant Valley-Ventura County (PV-VC) branch will hold its 2018 evaluations on Saturday, February 24 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Students will be informed of their individual evaluation date and time. Enrollment takes place in October of the previous year and the fee is due at that time. Fees vary according to level.
